Autonomous Jellyfish

After two years of meticulous work, the Anicka Yi installation now features 18 radio-controlled „aerobes“ that gracefully navigate the vast expanse of the turbine hall along the Thames. These aerobes were meticulously designed to mirror the artist’s vision of a novel ecosystem.

Concept

What sets these aerobes apart is their integration with an artificial life simulation system. This system equips them with an understanding of their environment, inner motivations, and distinct traits. Collectively, these elements empower the aerobes to make autonomous decisions within a constantly evolving ecosystem.

Technology

These aerobes possess a distinctive set of senses, using high-frequency radio waves for communication and spatial mapping among themselves, and employing thermal imaging to detect and respond to the presence of visitors.
